I wanted to take a moment to share my experience at the Republican National Convention, a pivotal event that left an indelible mark on my heart and mind. As a professional volunteer, I was deeply involved in the operations, and it truly was an experience of a lifetime—one that only deepened my pride in being a Republican.
The atmosphere of the convention was electric, yet somber. The tragic assassination attempt on President Trump cast a shadow over the event, but it also brought our party together like never before. There was a palpable shift in President Trump's demeanor—he was more resolute, more determined, and this steely resolve resonated throughout the convention. The attack, while horrifying, served as a stark reminder of the stakes we face and the strength of our commitment to defending our nation’s values.
It was great to hear from our party leaders like Vivek, Tucker, and JD at the Republican National Convention. However, what truly defined the event for me was the exceptional job the RNC did in highlighting the voices of everyday Americans. The Gold Star parents from Abbey Gate moved us with their pain and pride. The brother of Rachel Morin, a mother of five tragically raped and killed by an illegal immigrant, shared his raw, heart-wrenching honesty. Anne Funder brought the crowd to tears with the story of her son, who was killed by fentanyl—a tragedy all too common in our communities. And Pastor Sewall, from inner-city Detroit, lit up the arena with his message of hope and unwavering support for President Trump.
These were the moments that truly mattered because they laid out our message with clarity and conviction. These ordinary Americans are the heart and soul of our movement, reminding us why we fight and who we fight for.
One of the most profound moments of the convention was when both Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis spoke on the same night, with President Trump watching from the Family Box. The primary race was contentious, particularly between Trump and Haley, where things got ugly at times. But that night, there was a clear message of unity—a message that transcended past grievances for the greater good of our nation. It was a powerful reminder that our true enemy is not within our party, but in the opposition. Did we hear that message in Texas? I sure hope so, because it needs to happen. It is not a given that we will remain Red. The next time you disparage another Republican, try to stop and reflect on the real enemy: the Democratic Party.
Turning to our state’s politics, we recently held our first State Republican Executive Committee (SREC) meeting. As a newcomer, I took a bold step and ran for the officials committee, motivated by my desire to contribute to our party’s success. Although I didn’t win, I was encouraged by the support I received, and I remain committed to our goals. My focus is on helping to finance and raise money for our candidates, especially those down the ballot, through Get Out The Vote (GOTV) initiatives and advocating for cost-effective decision-making within the Republican Party of Texas (RPT).
There are a few key takeaways from the meeting that I’d like to highlight. First, our Candidate Resource Committee, which provides financial support to down-ballot candidates, is in need of our help. As Lucy and I travel around, we will be explaining their vital work and showing you how you can contribute. Supporting these candidates is critical to maintaining our strength at all levels of government.
We also voted on several resolutions, including the formation of a new Military Partnership Committee, aimed at forging partnerships with various military organizations—a move that passed overwhelmingly. Additionally, there was a resolution to maintain a robust RPT platform, a response to the platform formed at the RNC in Milwaukee with significant input from President Trump. I am fully in favor of a strong platform, and while I believe our current platform with hundreds of planks is already robust, I would have supported this resolution.
In closing, I want to express my deep commitment to our shared goals and to the principles that guide us as Republicans. The journey ahead is not without its challenges, but I am more determined than ever to fight for our values, our candidates, and our country. Let’s move forward together, united in purpose and unwavering in our resolve.
With deep respect and commitment,
Micheal Wheeler
